About Online Ruler — Precision Measurement for Any Digital Screen

Online Ruler (rulergo.com) is a free, browser-based measurement tool that turns any screen — desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone — into a precision ruler. Measure in inches, centimeters, or pixels at actual physical size, with no app to install and no account required.

Unlike most online rulers that default to the outdated 96 PPI web standard, Online Ruler lets you calibrate to your exact screen using four methods: auto-detect, device selection, screen diagonal entry, or a physical credit card. Once calibrated, 1 cm on your screen equals exactly 1 physical centimeter.

Our Mission

Measurement should be instant and free. We built Online Ruler because we kept reaching for a physical ruler that wasn't nearby — and all the online alternatives were inaccurate, cluttered with ads, or required unnecessary downloads.

Whether you are a student working on a craft project, a professional needing a quick check, or someone who simply doesn't have a ruler handy, our online ruler tool is fast, private, and accurate by default — with measurements in inches, centimeters, millimeters, and pixels at true actual size.

Why Calibration Matters

Most web-based rulers still assume every screen runs at 96 pixels per inch — a leftover from early Windows displays. On a modern Retina screen at 254 PPI, that assumption makes a 6-inch object read as about 3.5 inches. On a 4K monitor at 163 PPI, the same 6 inches would show up as roughly 4.5 inches. The error is not random; it is systematic and large enough to ruin craft projects, layout checks, or any work where size matters.

We built this tool around a multi-layered calibration engine: automated hardware fingerprinting, mathematical screen-diagonal computation, a curated device database, and physical credit-card alignment. Together, these four calibration methods give you a real actual size ruler on any display you own.

Key Features

  • Real-world units: measure in inches with exact fractions like 3 1/8", centimeters, and pixels. The built-in live unit converter handles millimeters, meters, and feet too, and it stays synced to your calibrated PPI.
  • Four precision calibration methods: auto-detect, device selection, screen diagonal entry, or a physical credit card. Pick the one that matches your workflow.
  • Rulers on any edge: place rulers on the top, bottom, left, or right screen edges — or on all four simultaneously — with dual-unit graduations.
  • Guide lines and crosshair: draggable guides and full-screen crosshair lines for precise 2D positioning.
  • Interactive caliper and protractor: drag a bounding box to measure width, height, and diagonal, or measure angles with the 360° protractor overlay.
  • Fullscreen mode: edge-to-edge measuring with the entire display as your ruler (press F).
  • Dark mode: respects your system preference, with a manual toggle for late-night measuring.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: units, tools, guides, and themes are all one keypress away.
  • Works everywhere: every modern browser — no download, no sign-up.

Privacy First

Online Ruler runs entirely in your browser. We do not collect personal data, do not require an account, and do not track your measurements. Your calibration settings are stored locally on your own device — nothing is ever uploaded to a server. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
